Scattered Links Book Tour and Giveaway

Thirteen-year-old Oksana lives on the streets of Russia with her pregnant mama and abusive aunt—both prostitutes. When Mama swells into labor, Oksana makes a decision to save herself from abandonment, a decision that torments her forever. But her plan fails when her aunt dumps her in an orphanage before she has the chance to say goodbye to her mama or tell her the secret that haunts her.

Scattered Links is a story of family and the consequences that come from never learning how to love. It’s a story of a girl’s inability to bond with her adopted family and the frustrations that follow.

How can a child understand the mechanics of forming a healthy relationship when she never had a mother who answered her cries, held her when she was frightened, fed her when she was hungry, or loved her unconditionally?

Only when the child meets a rescued abused horse, and recognizes the pain in his eyes, does she begin to trust again.

"CAPTIVATING! SCATTERED LINKS takes you down the street of nearly any Eastern European town, arm-in-arm with the orphaned. Michelle has captured the beauty and horror millions of children live everyday. The attention to detail is impressive. Having lived in a post-Soviet country for a time, visiting orphaned children, this fictional account rings with truth, from the heart-wrenching pain of abandonment to the realization of self-worth, and the love family and faith brings. Thank you for such an uplifting book, appropriate for the young reader, as well as adult. May your heart be encouraged, as mine was." - Kim de Blecourt, speaker and award-winning author of "Until We All Come Home: A Harrowing Journey, a Mother's Courage, a Race to Freedom"

“Scattered Links is a novel that pulls its characters from the gutters and, in the end, celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit.” A reviewer comment.

My thoughts:

This book is definitely not in my standard genre, but if they're all like Scattered Links I'll be changing my reading habits! The beginning of the book could almost be set anytime in the past several hundred years... a family living in poverty in a broken down area of Russia. A drunk mother who's pregnant with another child that the family can't afford to feed, and an abusive aunt who dumps the kids in an orphanage when things get to hard.

Oksana was raised in the kind of poverty most of us can't even imagine, squatting in abandoned buildings and stealing from vendors to feed her family. After she delivers her baby sister (alone) her aunt dumps her and her sister in orphanages, where Oksana's sister is adopted by a family from the US, who accept Oksana into their home.

Transition to living in the US, attending school and being expected to be part of a traditional family are very difficult for Oksana, and her and her adoptive parents struggle to find a balance in their life.

Scattered Links brought the cultural and financial differences between countries and families to the forefront of my mind. It shows how many problems children can have when their lives are drastically changed, especially if they were raised in an orphanage without love or basic compassion. It reminded me that everyone deserves to be loved and deserves a chance at a decent life. And it showed me how disorienting it can be to be given the life that children deserve if they've never had it before.

It's a wonderful story that reminds me that no matter who we are or where we're from...we're all human.

On the Inside Book Tour and Giveaway

On the InsideWhen Kristen is sentenced to seventeen years for committing a white collar crime, she’s forced to leave her husband and two sons behind.

Life in prison is a shock. She discovers that people aren’t always what they seem, love wears many faces, and friendship can make life worth living.

But as she struggles to survive on the inside, Kristen must face something even more frightening than her fellow inmates. . . herself.

On the Inside is based on true events, written from the authors own family tragedy.

Review for On The Inside.....
This book will hook you from the very first paragraph, as you meet Lakeisha, a mail scanner for a women’s prison. She reads the prisoner’s correspondence, checks it for drugs and dangerous devices, and delivers the mail. Lakeisha is drawn into the correspondence Kristen has with her husband. And in this way, the reader is also drawn into the story about life inside a correctional facility for women.  Kristen is the main character. She’s in jail for bilking her employer out of a huge sum of money. In the process, she lost the trust of her husband and children and virtually bankrupted them. They are bitter and wary of her, but she continues to send letters to her husband telling him how sorry she is. The only family member to write back is her sister-in-law, Olivia, who extends a lifeline to her with family pictures and events. We also meet a panoply of colorful characters from the flashy inmate, Lupe, to the prison psychiatrist, Megan, the warden, Laura, Kristen’s antagonist, Jess, and many others. Each person has their story, their trials, and triumphs, and you’ll find yourself rooting for all of them.

Ms. Cano expertly weaves in multiple points of view to make you understand and empathize with all of these people. Each has his or her own pain and sorrow as well as aspirations for a better future. Necessarily, some of the stories end tragically whereas others move on as best they can. But Kristen and the others learn to take happiness in small places and to accept what can’t be changed.

The story is uplifting and poignant. You won’t want to miss this. I read this in a single evening because I not just wanted to find out what happened to the characters, but I felt for them and laughed and cried and wished so much for them to be victorious in their lives.

Everything was resolved and there were no loose ends. Even though there was sadness leavened into the book, the overall message is joyful and shows the power of love, devotion, and forgiveness. You won’t be disappointed with this wonderful story. ~ Clare Chu

My Thoughts:

This book is a wonderful reminder that the women who live and work in prison are real people. It follows the lives of several main characters, both inmates and staff, through births, marriages, deaths, violence and heartbreak.

I teared up when I lived with Kristen through not seeing her sons for most of their childhood, laughed at the strange happenings within prison walls, and cried at several different points.

I watched friendships form through insurmountable odds, and hurt when some of them didn't last. This story was amazing, heartfelt, and a very quick read (I really wanted it to be longer, because I was so attached to the characters!) I definitely recommend this book to women everywhere!

You know you have too much on your plate when...

You get the time wrong for the Girl Scout cookie booth sale (and you're the troop leader AND you have all the cookies!)

We had a sale scheduled at 12 today and I thought it was at 3. I was still in my pajamas when my troop called at 12:15! I threw some clothes on, loaded up the van and rushed over.

I know it's not an excuse, but it's been a very very long week.

Saturday Scooter was sick with a cold and fever. Sunday was worse and I was worried about the flu (even though we all got flu shots it's scary this year). After a call to the doctor's office we went off to Urgent Care (since their office was closed Monday also). Double ear infections and laryngitis later and we were at home. But with a negative flu test!

Monday and Tuesday she would play for awhile and then be a lump for awhile... you all know what the lump stage is with sick kids! And the lump only wanted to lay on Mommy. By Wednesday hubby and I were sick too and Scooter was a lump all day. And her fever wouldn't quit.

The doctor had us come back in (to double check for flu and check for pneumonia). Luckily she was clear of both, but he thinks we have an adenovirus (of course one with a 10-12 day course of nastiness). By Thursday we were all sick.

By Thursday night I was so miserable that I gave myself 1 goal each day (get a load of laundry done, load the dishwasher, etc). Seriously that was all I could manage in any given day. Yesterday I was still a lump, then this morning I got to sleep in (finally) and was starting to feel a bit better.

Except I forgot what time our sale was scheduled...

What have you messed up recently? Please tell me you've done something so that I don't feel so lame!

Thinking of a happier place!
